Video 22 May 10 notes

New Woodkid video is like a melancholy live-action Adventure Time as directed by Spike Jonze.  This guy’s got a pretty good thing going.  Not the best songwriter, but he’s got a good voice and conjures up some stirring images.

Make good art.

Now I’m positive I don’t need to go to my own graduation ceremony when the time comes.  If VCU can’t get Neil Gaiman to speak then what’s the point.  This is the only speech anyone should ever hear.

Tigerlamp - Good Friends in My Head

Get ready for four tracks of atmospheric and hypnotic music done by Reid LaPierre (Houdan the Mystic, Night Idea) as Tigerlamp.  They were written, recorded and mastered (by Joshua Osborne of The Subterranea Collective, who also created the cover art) all in one day.  There is certainly something to be said about a project that takes such little time to complete.  The feeling is more immediate, more fleeting, and less structured.

Quote 20 Apr 90 notes
The next real literary ‘rebels’ in this country might well emerge as some weird bunch of anti-rebels, born oglers who dare somehow to back away from ironic watching, who have the childish gall actually to endorse and instantiate single-entendre principles. Who treat of plain old untrendy human troubles and emotions in U.S. life with reverence and conviction. Who eschew self-consciousness and hip fatigue. These anti-rebels would be outdated, of course, before they even started. Dead on the page. Too sincere. Clearly repressed. Backward, quaint, naive, anachronistic. Maybe that’ll be the point. Maybe that’s why they’ll be the next real rebels. Real rebels, as far as I can see, risk disapproval. The old postmodern insurgents risked the gasp and squeal: shock, disgust, outrage, censorship, accusations of socialism, anarchism, nihilism. Today’s risks are different. The new rebels might be artists willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the ‘Oh how banal.’ To risk accusations of sentimentality, melodrama. Of overcredulity. Of softness. Of willingness to be suckered by a world of lurkers and starers who fear gaze and ridicule above imprisonment without law. Who knows.

This dude works as a storyboard artist for Adventure Time and his self-released comics are absolutely mind-boggling.  Great for fans of science fiction, mythology and silliness.  He has one crazy imagination.
